Education, Children, and New Generations: Why Green Reconstruction Starts at School
September 1 is not just the beginning of the school year. It is a symbol of new opportunities, knowledge, and a different tomorrow. At a time when Ukraine is simultaneously fighting for independence and planning reconstruction, we must remember: the future depends on what we invest in education today.
Ecology as part of education. In elementary school, children study the subject “I Explore the World.” They learn about nature, the environment, and interconnections. But further on — in middle and high school — there is a lack of systematic environmental education. That is why we risk raising a generation that will not have a sufficient foundation for decision-making in a world where climate and resources will determine the security of states.
Children as agents of change. New generations are not just students at desks. They are young people who are already creating eco-initiatives in their schools, communities, and even influencing politics. Children sort waste, plant trees, and work with renewable energy as part of school projects. For them, “environmentalism” ceases to be an abstraction and becomes a way of life.
An inspiring example. The pilot project “School under the Sun” in Monastyrysk is not just solar panels on the roof. It is a space where children learn to see how renewable energy really works, how the school becomes independent and safer, and the community saves resources. These are practical lessons that form a completely different way of thinking.
Why is this important in a global context. The UN and UNESCO emphasize that environmental education of young generations is the key to achieving climate goals. If we talk about the green reconstruction of Ukraine, we must understand that it will not happen without educational changes. Because it is children and adolescents who will live in the world after the reconstruction.
September 1 is a reminder to adults: we do not just send children to school. We teach them to create the future. And it depends on us whether it will be sustainable.
